“We cannot create observers by saying, ‘observe’ but by giving them the power and the means for this observation and these means are procured through education of the senses.”
– Maria Montessori
There is something about this classic Montessori sensorial activity that captivates children of all ages. They just love the idea of isolating and exploring one sense at a time, not to mention the mystery of what smell they might encounter next.
Plus, it’s easy to set-up (older children might even want to set it up for their younger siblings).
First, round up a collection of small bottles or jars, cotton balls, and essential oils. Place several drops of oil onto a cotton ball and place it inside the jar. Make sure you put the lid on tight. Label the jars with numbers, and write the name of each scent (or draw a picture of the item) on a separate piece of paper.
Then ask your child to smell each of the scents inside the bottle and see if she can match each one to the correct bottle!
Note: We suggest you also label the bottom of each jar with the name of the scent (in words or a picture) so that children have a way to self-check their matches!
