Leaf Hunt

Description

Identify letters and numbers in an engaging and playful way! In this lesson, children hunt for all 26 letters of the alphabet while also learning letter names, sounds, and the numbers 1-26.

Directions:

  1. Print the Leaf Letters and Leaf Numbers back to back, cut them apart, and hide them. If the weather cooperates, hide them outside! Use clothespins to clip the letters onto trees, branches, or anything else you can think of.
  2. Have children hunt for the letters. Once a letter is found, encourage them to name the letter and the sound the letter makes.  Then, turn the leaf over and see if they can identify the number!

Once all the Leaf Letters have been found, there are MANY things you can do with them:

  • Put the Leaf Letters in alphabetical order.
  • Randomly choose 3-5 Leaf Letters. Set them out and encourage children to match small objects to the letters, according to their beginning sounds.
  • Match uppercase letters (from a small movable alphabet) to the lowercase letters on theLeaf Letters.
  • Put the Leaf Numbers in sequential order from 1-26.
  • Randomly choose 3-5 Leaf Numbers. Set them out and encourage children to count out the corresponding number using counters or other small objects.
  • Use the Leaf Numbers to work on skip counting by 2’s.
  • Take out the Leaf Numbers 1-10, mix them up, and have students put them in order from least to greatest (or greatest to least).
  • Laminate the cards and allow children to practice their handwriting by tracing over the letters and numbers.
